Mortal Kombat 11 is both the 11th fighting game and the 22nd installment in the Mortal Kombat series. It was released on April 23rd, 2019.
Gameplay[]
NetherRealm Studios is known for having developed the Mortal Kombat titles and also the Injustice series. For Mortal Kombat 11, the new Custom Character Variation system will be introduced, the official press release states that it will “deepen and personalize the player experience by giving them creative control of building customized versions of the character roster”.
Plot[]
Some time after Shinnok's defeat at the hands of Cassie Cage, Raiden is seen torturing the fallen Elder God in the damaged Jinsei Chamber. The God of Thunder, now with a darker persona due to the Jinsei's corruption, announces to Shinnok that he will no longer have mercy and will destroy Earthrealm's enemies before they can attack the realm. Raiden threatens him saying that he'll be the first. Shinnok reminds him that he can't kill an Elder God, but Raiden states that "There are fates worse than death" and decapitates him. Raiden says to the severed, yet still-living head of Shinnok that he'll deliver him to Liu Kang in the Netherrealm as a warning and teleports away.
The Keeper of Time, Kronika, appears in the chamber, annoyed at Raiden for upsetting the balance of time after Mortal Kombat X's events. She approaches and tells Shinnok that the Ark of Time bends at her will and that it's only a matter of time.
Tired of Earthrealm’s defiance, Kronika will bring order to the universe through any means necessary. During this wicked ordeal, old allies and foes return.
Development[]
The game was revealed by Ed Boon on December 6, 2018, at The Game Awards.

Modes[]
A list of the modes that are available to play in Mortal Kombat 11.
Story Mode: The Story Mode of Mortal Kombat 11 contains 16 chapters total, telling a story that takes place 2 years after the events of its predecessor. As for the past iterations of the kombatants, their storyline took place 27 years ago, after Kung Lao defeated Quan Chi and Shang Tsung at nearly the end of the ninth game’s second tournament. Each chapter focuses on one or two characters from the series and contains a combination of fights and extended cut-scenes. Mortal Kombat 11 also has chapter titles in addition to the name(s) of the playable character(s).
Towers of Time: Towers of Time is a game mode in Mortal Kombat 11. It is an ever-changing rotation of challenging Towers. Fighting through the challenges will earn profile experience, level up character Gear, grant limited rewards, and award currency.
There are several event types:
- Tutorial Towers: Four short towers that you must complete before you can access the other types. These teach you concepts like: endurance, consumables, and boss battles.
- Klassic Towers: There are 3 variations, one with 5 opponents, one with 8 and the last with 10. The rewards increase the more opponents there are. The final boss is always Kronika, and instead of interacting with the character she has her own, unique intro.
- Tag Team Towers: In Tag Team Towers, the player could either play with a friend or as another character and play 2-on-2 battles. The rules are the same as in the Klassic Towers.
- Timed Towers: A few towers on a single platform that refresh hourly, daily, or every few days. These can sometimes focus on certain characters. Occasionally these may be a single Boss Tower.
- Character Towers: Unlocked by spending Koins. To start, you summon a tower for your character for 25,000 Koins. After that, you can summon the next tier for that character for 50,000 Koins, etc. These towers award brutalities, intros, gear, skins, variation icons, and augments for the chosen character.
- The Gauntlet: A collection of 30 rounds of special towers.
- Summoned Towers: Accessed by using Tower Keys.
- Heroic Towers
- Rapid Towers
- Tag Assist Towers
- Premier Towers
- Ko-Op Towers
- Living Towers: The Living Towers are similar to the "Challenge Tower" from Mortal Kombat (2011). It features challenges that the player is able to play through for rewards. Each challenge can include modifiers that change the gameplay.
- Challenge Towers: The Challenge Tower consists of 300 individual "Challenges" - normal fights, fights with specific conditions, and side games such as Test Your Might, Test Your Sight, Test Your Strike, Test Your Luck, Test Your Slice, and Test Your Balance.
Konsumables can be used to power up fighters with offensive or defensive benefits. They are often useful in counteracting certain abilities that opponents will have.
The Krypt: The Krypt is a special feature where you use the Koins you collect as you play in order to purchase items such as concept art, videos, and even hidden Fatalities and new characters. The Krypt is navigated from a third person perspective, where players control an adventurer known only as the Descendant of Apep. There are many doors and gates that block the player's path, which can be opened by solving puzzles or retrieving certain key items. There are also hundreds of chests scattered throughout The Krypt, which mostly contain random rewards. The varying types of chest each require a different currency to unlock: Koins, Soul Fragments, and Hearts.
Chests requiring Hearts have pre-determined loot, and are the same for everybody. To open them, one must first smash the bust of Shao Kahn atop the chest. There are a few rarer chests as well, including: Kronika Vaults, Blindfold Chests, and a couple unique ones like the submerged chest in The Dead Woods.
There is no Save option in The Krypt. Because the game requires an online connection, saving is automatic so that it can store your rewards. Leaving the Krypt and returning later will let you continue exactly where you left off.
At the entrance, Shang Tsung materializes in a vortex of green energy and welcomes you:
—Shang Tsung |
A number of death traps are present throughout the Krypt as well that can kill the player. There is no penalty for falling victim to these or dying at the hands of the Krypt's denizens, as the player quickly respawns nearby, though Shang Tsung will wryly comment on the player's demise.
Key Items[]
Key Items in the Krypt have various uses. Some are permanent tools to aid your adventure, and some are consumable to increase your ability to find treasure.
Sub-Areas[]
- Palace Entrance
- The Courtyard
- The Dead Woods
- Forge
- Mountain Pass
- Shrine
- Warrior Shrine
- The Sacrifice
- Courtyard Cave
- Goro's Lair
- The Dojo
- Wooden Bridge
- The Bridge
Enemies[]
There are two enemy types in the Krypt. The monster, which appears occasionally when putting on Kenshi's Blindfold, grabbing the player by the neck and exploding their head. By swinging Shao Kahn's hammer right after putting on the blindfold, the monster can be killed and the player will receive a reward.
The other enemy type is the spider. They appear only in Kytinn areas of the Krypt and will chase after the player if noticed. They will spray fire at the player, burning them to death. They can also be killed by Shao Kahn's hammer.
Online[]
In Online mode, one or two players can battle over the internet against other players. Online mode contains three options:
- Worldwide: Players can battle other players around the world. Players are also able to join worldwide rooms with custom rules. Additionally, players can also create their own room with their desired custom rules for other players around the world to join. Alternatively, online game modes are also available, and worldwide rooms for battles can be created as well.
- Regional: Like in Worldwide, players can battle other players, but only players in their region. The rest is the same: players can create or join regional rooms for battles or for game modes.
- Friends: Choosing Friends will allow players to battle against friends from the Friends menu, or join their friends' rooms if there are currently any. Again, players and friends can choose custom rules for the battles.
AI Battles: A 3v3 battle in which you choose a team of computer-controlled combatants to fight for you.
Test Your Sight: The mini-game involves the character standing above a set of cups, heads, or skulls. The game will show the player which cup has a koin, an eye, a brain, or the MK icon in it, and they will begin to shuffle around in a random order, and by the end the player has to select the one which the item is in. As the player progresses through the mini-game, the number of cups, heads, or skulls will increase, as will the speed in which they would move. At higher levels, the camera would even move in order to make it more difficult for the player to keep track of the movement of the MK icon. Like Test Your Might, the player is rewarded with Koins, Soul Fragments, and Hearts if the selected one is correct. In a dark, yet humorous twist, the player, upon failure, is rewarded with death.
Test Your Luck: The chosen character must spin a set number of slot-machine style reels (between three and seven) which will first determine their opponent, and then various added status effects, such as poison; armor; increased time; decreased time; or headlessness. The opponent must then be defeated with the imposed handicaps and/or benefits. Players may also assign fixed modifiers to one or more reels, which can be earned through the Krypt or the Living Towers.
Test Your Strike: A minigame that involves hitting a specific block in a stack of blocks by striking with enough force not to break any of the other blocks surrounding it. It is a simple jump that is similar to Test Your Might, but with an upper limit as well as a lower limit, which is the threshold in which the strike's strength must be set if this test is to be passed.
Test Your Balance: A minigame which involves tilting the Nintendo Switch or PS4 left to right to keep balancing on an iron bar and to survive for a set period of time or balancing within zones for set periods of time. Failing to keep balance will make the respective character fall to his or her death. After several levels, flying body parts will hit the player, increasing the balance difficulty.
Test Your Slice: A minigame that involves using the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons or the PS4’s joystick to slice body parts while avoiding the bombs.
Kustom Kombat: Kustom Kombat lets players choose different modifiers that will be used during a match. The modifiers players can select are ones from Test Your Luck and Living Towers challenges. Each player can choose one or two modifiers to be used in a match; making the max amount of modifiers being four. They can also choose to have the modifier applied to their own, their opponent, or both players.
Modifiers can be unlocked by completing an Hourly Living Tower or unlocking them from The Krypt, by purchasing them with koins. Like mentioned above, both players may select one or two modifiers, and may select if that modifier will be applied to themself, their opponent, or both players.
Motor Kombat: A minigame that features 12 characters in a Mario Kart-like racing game. Each character has their own special moves and their own customized go-kart. Deathtraps are also available and can be bumped, driven, or fallen into.
Puzzle Kombat: Puzzle Kombat mixes fighting with Tetris-style gameplay. Two-block colored combination pieces are randomly generated but both players receive the same pieces. They come in red, blue, yellow and green. Players can arrange their horizontal and vertical positions before they touch the bottom or another piece where they will stay until broken. In order to break pieces, a Breaker must come in contact with its corresponding colored block, removing the block from the board. Sometimes, the Breaker comes in pairs which results in automatic destruction upon contact. As moves are made, the characters (transformed into 'chibi-like' versions) fight one another. Another block-breaking piece is the Bomb, represented by a solid black sphere. It destroys all blocks of the color it comes in contact with and pops up both kombatants, though the user receives no bonus.
Through strategic placing, it is possible to chain up block breaking and create kombat, which in turn prompts the kombatant to perform their own combos. Blocks broken are transferred to the opposing player which fall from the top and pile up. Over time by breaking blocks, a Super gauge fills up. By pressing 1, players can unleash their special to buffer their own odds or attack the other player. In true Mortal Kombat fashion, each session has two or more rounds if the player adjusts settings. When the battle concludes, a Stage Fatality is automatically performed on the loser, although the nature of it is a bit more light-hearted and comical but still somewhat graphic.
Forge: The Forge is a location in The Krypt where collected materials can be crafted into powerful artifacts, including keys and Tower Konsumables. To craft an item though, a recipe is required. Recipes can be viewed in the Kollection screen, under the Kustomize menu. Ingredient names are not listed, but icons are, which can be compared to your Inventory. To get actual recipes, play Towers of Time, explore The Krypt, and make offerings at the Shrine. Recipes only display two out of the three required ingredients, so one must experiment to fill in the final slot. Choosing the wrong one will result in failure, but the materials will not be used or lost, though any required money will.
The Grid: The Grid boasts 25 different weapons including flamethrowers, machine guns, and even megaphones, individual special abilities enhanced by powerups, and one of the goriest presentations around.
The gameplay is similar to many first-person shooters like Quake and Outriggers, except that the player is viewing behind the character, effectively being a third-person shooter.
MK Basketball: A mini-game that is played in a similar fashion as in Mario Hoops 3-on-3. Players must score points by shooting a basketball into their hoop in order to win the game. Whichever team has the most points after all periods wins the match. Two points are acquired when the ball makes it in the hoop; three points are acquired when the ball gets shot from the three pointer and beyond or when a special shot is performed. The koins that the players gather along the way are added to their total score. Also in this sport, which is exclusive to this game, there is a shot clock on the bottom-left hand corner of the screen so the characters can shoot within the time limit, just like in a professional NBA game. If they do not shoot before time runs out, the other team gets possession. Players are also able to defend, block, and make dunks in this game in a similar way to the actual sport. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, then overtime will begin. With overtime in this sport, no game ends in a draw.
Survival Mode: A mini-game where players defend themselves against waves of enemies.

Trivia[]
- This is the first Mortal Kombat game in over 20 years (specifically, since Mortal Kombat 4) to be titled with just a number rather than a subtitle. While the previous entry was the tenth game in the mainline series, Mortal Kombat X, as a Roman numeral, does not count, as all of the marketing referred to the "X" as the letter, not "ten".
- This game has a massive amount of skins, with everyone from the base roster having at least 60.
- This is the first Mortal Kombat game where all playable characters speak during their own Arcade ending.
- The Terminator is the only exception to this, Cassie Cage being the one who speaks in his ending.
- Between the Story Mode, Krypt and gameplay, many characters use reused audio for either gameplay or cameo appearances in the game from previous games like Mortal Kombat (2011) and Mortal Kombat X. The additional voices are listed in the cast, with the actors/actress that have their audio reused listed as italicized uncredited (See Above).
- Mortal Kombat 11 marks the return of Friendships, which haven't be seen since Mortal Kombat Trilogy, released 15 years prior the update.
- Mortal Kombat 11 is the second game in the series to feature two guest characters from a shared Universe in the game as playable characters, this being the Terminator and RoboCop from their shared comics and video game RoboCop Versus The Terminator. The first game to do this was Mortal Kombat X which features the Alien and Predator from their shared Alien vs. Predator franchise that spans different comics, video games and a cinematic franchise in film.
